Drogba formally confirms his retirement from football

Chelsea and Ivory Coast legend, Didier Drogba has formally announced his retirement from football.

Rumours have been for weeks now that he is set to retire, but now he has confirmed that it is true. His career lasted 20 years kicking the round leather object.

Didier Drogba would be remembered most by Chelsea fans because he scored the winning goal of the only Champions league trophy Chelsea won so far. For Chelsea, he played 381 matches and scored 164 goals. He went on to win four Premier League titles and four FA Cups titles with Chelsea.

Elsewhere in Ivory Coast, he went on to become the leading goal scorer. Didier Drogba was loved by his country for his commitment to developing football in the county and also motivating upcoming footballers to do more.

Didier Drogba co-owned a club in the US, named Phoenix Rising, where he retired his 40 years old legs.

Drogba won four Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the 2012 Champions League, he was also handed the English Premier League Golden Boot in 2006-2007 and 2009-2010 for scoring the highest goals in the EPL while he is also Ivory Coast’s all-time record goalscorer with 65.

Drogba last match was for Phoenix Rising against Louisville City in the USL Cup final but they lost the match 1-0. Then the rumour of his retirement started after the match on November 8.

But now he has confirmed it himself with one of his latest tweets: “I wanna thank all the players, managers, teams and fans that I have met and made this journey one of a kind,”

“If anyone tells you your dreams are too big, just say thank you and work harder and smarter to turn them into a reality.”
