Donald Trump threatens US government shut down for ‘years’ over wall funding

The Mexico border has been one of the main parts of President Donald Trump promise to Americans and now he has threatened to shut down the US government so as to convince the Democrats to accept the building of his planned Mexican border wall.

In order to bypass the US Congress and secure money for the building of the wall, President Trump is considering declaring a national emergency.

He told journalist in the White House that he made it clear to Democrats Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, and other congressional leaders in a meeting he had with them.

Democrats have refused to authorise the spending $5bn (£3.95bn) of government money for the project, which Mr Trump has demanded, but earlier he said the wall would be funded by Mexico.

The shutdown has gotten to the third week and many are unable to collect their salaries because of it.

Democrats Senate minority leader, Mr Schumer, told Mr Trump not to “hold hundreds of thousands of Americans hostage” and to “open up the government” in order to continue discussions on the wall.

He continued: “We told the president we needed the government open. He resisted. In fact, he said he would keep the government closed for a very long time for months or even years.”

President Trump said: that discussions with the Democrats had been productive and that himself and the Democrats are on the same page in ending the government shutdown.

The President continued: “It’s very important that we have great border security, I think it’s going to be over with sooner than people think.”
