Reports gaining grounds is that Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara
Gabonese military as announced that they have taken over power in the country. This would bring to an end the rule of President Ali Bongo which has lasted for 50 years.
The military said the reason they are seizing power is “to restore democracy”.
The military announced the seizure of power to the citizens of the country at about 3.00 GMT. They announced “National Restoration Council”.
Mr Bongo, who became president in 2009, has been ill and receiving treatment in Morocco for more than two months.
According to the eyewitness and reporters, the army armoured vehicles and tanks were seen patrolling the streets of the capital, Libreville.
Mr Bongo said that he was fine in a New Year’s Day broadcast, however, the military did not like his being away for some time and they have which described the broadcast as “a pitiful sight and a relentless attempt to cling onto power”.
